OTP: Your Card's Digital Bodyguard

Excite Credit Union has recently implemented a new layer of security to help reduce debit card fraud. Starting February 24 you may be prompted to enter a One-Time Passcode (OTP) to authorize some online debit card purchases. Member account security is one of our highest priorities, and enabling this extra measure of security is one more way Excite Credit Union is working to protect your accounts from fraud.

How it works: When you make a purchase online using your Excite Credit Union debit card, a One-Time Passcode (OTP) request may pop up indicating that you'll need to further authenticate the transaction before the purchase can be completed. Online transactions can be approved, challenged or declined based on a fraud risk score. If your purchase is challenged, you will be required to complete the additional authentication by receiving and entering the OTP. The pop-up options are based on the current information we have on file for you: text message, voice call, or email.

If you do not enter the correct passcode, your transaction will not be processed. You can contact us directly at 800-232-8669 to resolve.

One-Time Passcodes will not apply to most transactions, so don’t be alarmed if you don’t receive a request. But also, don’t be alarmed if you do: This extra authentication step is just a sign that our security measures are working to keep your accounts safe.

FAQs

Since your Excite Credit Union Debit Card will automatically be recognized at any merchant participating in the program, you can continue to shop as you do today.

After Visa is selected as the payment method, messaging will be displayed to notify you that 3DS & OTP will be utilized for this particular transaction.

Note: Using 3DS & OTP is up to the merchant, and not every transaction from the same merchant will utilize the Visa Secure process.

If your transaction is denied because you were not able to complete the verification process, a pop-up window will be displayed providing contact information for an Excite Credit Union representative.

To continue processing your transaction, please contact the number located within the pop-up window and an Excite Credit Union service representative will be able to assist with investigating the cause of the denial and work with you to complete the transaction.

If you ever receive an OTP for no reason, contact us immediately at 800-232-8669. It could mean that someone is attempting to use your debit card information. When we contact you, WE WILL NEVER ASK for an OTP or any usernames or passwords.

No. An OTP will not be required for all debit card transactions.

If you enter the code incorrectly, you will need to contact us at 800-232-8669 for assistance or use a different payment method to complete your transaction.

If you decline to receive and authenticate an OTP, you won't be able to use your debit card for that transaction.

Like many financial institutions, we've seen an increase in online debit card fraud in recent years. Enabling this security feature adds an additional layer of security and fraud detection. When our monitoring systems detect a need for additional authentication, OTP authentication may help determine if the debit cardholder is the purchaser.

As always, if you have questions please contact our Service Center 800.232.8669
